I am completely in love with my neon Nintendo Switch and so far it’s slowly becoming my main device as of playing new releases. However there is one thing that keeps bothering me about the console/hybrid device and
that is indeed it’s mediocre operating system. Now of course one can say Nintendo’s never been that type of console company, usually the main focus of there consoles is for playing some of the best first party titles of all time, but then you have to remember what was offered with the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo’s last massive portable hit that released back in 2011 and was a device I used a lot before the Switch. That pocket envious handheld had an OS with a slew of features and even themes eventually dropped on the device with the inclusion of a dated but useful web browser pre-installed.
The Nintendo 3DS, released back in 2011 came with an MP3 player, the built-in microphone (strange they over complicated that) and a debatable camera that allowed the interesting use of augmented reality. To add more insult to injury the Switch is lacking features other consoles have, now once again, yes this is Nintendo we are talking about, however with no bundled entertainment software and a future paid service, you would think they would add system features and services to encourage users that they are dedicated to making it a little less depressing to use. Some people always make this strange argument that one should not complain about the lack thereof features, however if they were to purchase for example a PS4 and not see Netflix and YouTube (which is on both the 3DS AND Wii U!) they’d have some minor confusion as if why that isn’t a default addition to there 250+ dollar console.
To return to what I mentioned about the 3DS having a microphone, not even that feature is relatively new, the Nintendo DSi even had a microphone! Now of course the Switch had to over complicate this much-needed feature with some of the laziest implementation of microphone communication ever! To even get voice chat over a game you will need a separate app for the entire device. Here’s the over complicated process: Download the app, get a compatible headset to use with the phone app, then select the game on the app while online in the game on the Switch, oh but don’t forget to plug in the separate Nintendo Switch dongle into the console and the device as well. Why is such a simple feature so overly complicated! I might be alone on this issue, people have indeed told me that most of that crap can be done on your phone, but I just believe with a paid service and so far bland UI, Nintendo will at least gives us something to do with the OS that warrants any future plans. I wouldn’t mind at least seeing themes on the device, that would indeed be a good start!
