If you call yourself a gamer, do you think people that only play on a smartphone or tablet are considered gamers?
I have been asked many times this question. my first reply was Hell no. Then thinking to myself Yes and a question mark. So I started asking this question also, thinking about it for some time. I came to this conclusion.
Gaming enthusiast or the Hardcore gamer seem to look down on people that only play games casually. That was me, when I thought hardcore gaming was the only way to be true gamer.
So what type of gamers are there?
The non gamer. Someone that never plays video games or play only on occasion.
The casual gamer is the person who will put some money into gaming a bit of time and considers it a hobby. Many of them spend countless hours on one franchise or genre this goes against the very meaning of casual so let’s call them gamers. They play the Hyped games and only games there friends play It can be on a console a PC or your Smartphone or tablet. the platform not that important.
The gaming enthusiast, hardcore gamer is someone deeply involved in gaming. They follow the gaming industry. Immersed in the gaming culture. Gaming being their primary hobby put a significant amount of their income and time into it. Usually owning multiple platforms and hundreds if not thousands if games. Of many different genres. Some of them contributing to YouTube, making mods, or doing some other activities in the gaming community.
So could you actually consider someone that plays only on a smartphone or tablet hardcore? I have to say my answer changed to a yes.
With the games and accessories available for tablets and smartphones today there are absolutely hardcore gamers on this platform. No longer are we in the days of Angry Birds and Clash of Kings. There are hundreds if Quality games to be played. Some free and many you must purchase. There are gamepads and headphones. Emulation giving them access to thousands of games. Videos of mobile play on YouTube. Their involvement in the gaming community.
I came to this conclusion by talking to fellow gamers and with personal experience. I play many hour each week on my tablet all quality games. Both from apps and with emulation. If I didn’t own multiple platforms and only played on a smartphone or tablet I could still fill all the requirements of a gaming enthusiast.
At one time I thought mobile gaming was a disgrace to gaming but in my personal experience have moved on. I now realize that it’s all just a matter of preference.
