Battalion 1944 is a recent indie release developed by Bulkhead Interactive and published by Square Enix. The game attempts to capture the older twitch shooting feel, which Call of Duty was known for, without killstreaks and other mechanics that muddle down the gameplay. At this moment in time Battalion 1945 is only on PC, but will be coming to console soon.
The game, even in early access, is clean and polished. In my three days of intensive play, I encountered very few bugs and glitches. The fast-paced reflex shooting is a refreshing breath of fresh air in an era where shooters are more of a slot machine than a game that requires skill.
Battalion 1944 is a purely multiplayer experience, meaning it has classic game modes like deathmatch, capture the flag, and domination. These modes are fun, but they get overshadowed by the most innovative part of Battalion 1944. This mode is called war tide. War tide is the crown jewel of Battalion. It is a 5v5 round based gamemode, with no respawns. It works like CSGO, where you earn currency each round, but there’s a catch. You not only have to kill an enemy, you must also pick up a token that they drop. These tokens are like pre-made classes, for example, one comes with a scoped sniper, and the other with an SMG. You can only use one of these tokens per round, and your team has a set number of tokens. You can only earn tokens by picking them up like I mentioned before. Once your team runs out of tokens, you all must use the default class, which is comprised of a basic rifle. Overall this game mode adds another layer of depth that I would expect out of a tactical shooter, and it works very well. Battalion has a very generic art style that does it an injustice. It makes the game look like nothing special when in reality it is one of the best shooters of the year. So far Battalion 1944 is looking promising, and with great eSports backing, Battalion will become something great.
Battalion 1944 is worth the $15-dollar retail price, and I would recommend it to any old school FPS fans looking for a fun game, during the silent months of the gaming year.
I am Captain, and this has been Battalion 1944, The CoD WW2 fans wanted.
A solid shooter at a decent price, at this moment however, it does need work on servers and visuals.
- Fast paced gameplay with solid shooter elements
- Lack of Voice chat and bland visuals
