Do you remember the moment when Bill Gates revealed the original Xbox to the public at CES 2001?
I bet that this was the most epic moment of the early 2000’s and it seems that we are heading towards a new mind blowing moment in our lives.
If you were paying attention on social media such as: Twitter and Facebook, you will have noticed the name “Yeti” here and there.
Recent rumours point out that this name is the code name of a possible entry of Google into the console market. The name Yeti stands for a streaming service Google is working on. Basically a Netflix for games but the rumours also say that it doesn’t stop there. Google might be making a console with it that runs on this service.
If the console part is true, then this means that we will have a 4th player in the hardware space next to Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony.
The service will more than likely be similar to Nvidia’s Geforce Now service.
Next to the rumours of a possible console, we get rumours about the fact that the service will run on the Pixel phones and Chromebooks, meaning that this gaming service will revolutionize the way we play games.
A big sign of Google entering the console market is that they just hired Phil Harrison, a ex-Xbox and PlayStation exec.
Google will surely shake things up in how we play games. Hate it or not but physical media is fading away and we are moving towards downloaded media and even this will possibly die off in the near future, paving the way towards full streamed media like what happened to the movie and music industry. We moved from physical media towards downloads like on MP3’s… and now we are streaming music on Spotify and movies on Netflix. The gaming industry will be next and Google might be the first one to set the first step.
Either way, this will be very interesting to witness.
