Do you remember when everyone wanted to go back to the times when single-player shooters thrived and not everything was CoD? Suddenly, Duke Nukem Forever came out and people realised that maybe everything being CoD is actually not that bad. Well, Machine Games’ excellent reboot of Wolfenstein confirmed that I was right in the first place, thank you very much!
Either way, Machine Games are back with an action-packed sequel to The New Order! The New Colossus is an excellent addition to the Wolfenstein name and brings with it an intriguing story, great characters and some outstanding, completely OTT set-pieces. The cut scenes are beautifully animated and the script is wonderfully written, voice acting is top-notch and is consistently performed well by an incredibly talented cast. The games main character, BJ Blazkowicz, is a great character, flashbacks to his horrific childhood show moments that can sometimes be hard to watch, the flashbacks show how fragile BJ really is despite his, you know, talent of Nazi killing.
The main attraction of Wolfenstein 2 is its action and its really is impressive. The shooting itself is responsive and the arsenal is great at reducing Nazis to paste in seconds. Its so satisfying to fire every gun and even weapons like the standard pistol feel great to fire and, despite not being anyone’s weapon of choice, actually causes a considerable amount of damage, its no Dieselkraftwerk but it does the job. Speaking of the Dieselkraftwerk, Wolfenstein 2 doesn’t just have regular weapons you’ll see in every other shooter. The Laserkraftwerk, for example, is a weapon made for melting your enemies! One shot against any human enemy with the Laserkraftwerk and they are dead and buried, it can also be used to create new passageways by melting metal doors.
All Reich now
The main story line for The New Colossus is very simple but its effective. Basically, after (somehow) surviving an explosion aimed at General Death’s-head, BJ Blazkowicz wakes up from a coma to find that his resistance groups stolen U-boat is under siege by Frau Engel, a high ranking member of the Nazi party and head of “The League of German girls”. The games opening mission is BJ in a wheelchair shooting Nazis, its great fun and absolutely bonkers. Frau Engel is the main villain throughout the game and also starred as a secondary antagonist in The New Order. Engel is a great villain, she’s cruel and makes jokes when speaking to BJ (They are normally related to murder and torture but you cant have everything I guess).
My favourite thing about Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus however, is that Machine Games have made a game about killing Nazis in America when, in the real world, alt-right groups and white supremacist groups have made themselves more than known. This does not mean that Wolfenstein 2 favours a left-winged agenda and the accusations that this game is a “SJW” game aren’t clearly evidenced. No matter what political opinion you have, Wolfenstein 2 is a marvellous game that I recommend to anyone with the slightest interest in shooters.
Wolfenstein II: The New Collosus
Possibly one of the best games of 2017. Wolfenstein 2 has responsive shooting, fast and brutal action but also contains an interesting story with great characters.
- Amazing, responsive shooting
- Incredible voice-acting
- intriguing story and likeable characters
- a bit too short
